Recreational and playgrounds
Surfacing of recreation and playground areas is a critical aspect of any new or existing project. As 79% of all accidents occurs from falls, and each year in the United States around 200,000 preschool and elementary children receive emergency department assistance for injuries that occurs on playground equipment, proper surfacing must be taken very seriously.
In the market there are four different types of protective surfacing; loose stones, sand, mulch and rubber pavers (such as Sofscape Pavers). Of these, Sofscape Pavers meets the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (C.P.S.C) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A).
One major concern with loose stones, sand or mulch is that impact attenuation properties vary depending on the environmental conditions such as: wet or dry, freezing temperatures, and material thickness.
Loose material is lost as it gets taken out of the area and it can also hide dangerous objects such as broken glass, needles, and in some cases syringes, creating a great hazard for users. In addition, mulch (organic) material or wood chips can become an ideal environment for fungus. The fungus can cause breathing problems and possible fatalities in rare cases.
